The vast majority of pregnant women in the United

The vast majority of pregnant women in the United States don’t use doulas, but that number is growing. Most healthcare providers don’t know exactly what to think of doulas, who provide emotional and physical support during pregnancy. They’re trained to offer information about labor and delivery, and often stay at a laboring woman’s side through her entire labor experience.⁠

A doula will provide the physical, emotional, and educational support you need throughout labor. This can include staying by your side through contractions, providing comforting touch, massage, verbal encouragement, and warm baths and blankets. Doulas also provide assistance with decision-making around medical interventions such as cesarean sections or induction of labor.⁠

When you decided you want a Doula, schedule interviews so you find the perfect one for you. Here are some questions you should include in your interview:⁠
What did your training involve, and how many births have you attended?⁠
What specific services do you provide, including any extras that cost additional fees? What is your backup plan if you’re unavailable when I need you?⁠
What is your philosophy about pregnancy and birth? How do you approach your work?⁠
What was the most challenging birth you have attended?⁠
What do you think I should know before I give birth?⁠
What is your scope of practice, and how does your role differ from that of my birth provider?⁠
